Update: We’ve Moved Our Operation from Betty’s Bar & Bistro to Oz New Orleans at 800 Bourbon Street.
Are you a member of New Orleans’ LGBTQ community, service industry, or gig economy? Are you out of work? Let us help with free meal assistance.
New Orleans is a city known worldwide for its hospitality. When a stay-at-home order was promulgated by Mayor LaToya Cantrell, vital for fighting the novel coronavirus, it immediately resulted in mass layoffs for the local service industry and gig economy workers.
After seeing the effect of the mayor’s order and the resulting need for food security, Sarah Manowitz and Reed Wendorf teamed up to lend a hand. Sarah is the general manager of Oz New Orleans and Reed is the Editor-in-Chief of Ambush Magazine & CrescentCity.com.
The meal assistance program began when the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Engagement (ONE) reached out. The ONE was looking to connect Gate Group, a manufacturer of hot, cold, and ambient shelf-stable foods for the airline industry, with community groups providing meals for those impacted by COVID-19-related food security issues. Since starting, additional food supply partners have joined the effort, including World Central Kitchen, Gate Gourmet, Barmen’s Fund, SBP, and Nola Tree Project who provide roughly 28,000 meals each week (as of March 5).
This effort wouldn’t be possible without our amazing team of volunteers or without our donors, sponsors, and partners.
